I write this post from the heart of the Port City of Tema, Greater Accra Region, Ghana with my heart wanting to jump out my mouth. I know I am sweating, typing as fast as I can, good I am in a damn cold server room at the moment. My heart is filled with emotions, my eyes with tears. She is out!!! Kali 2.0 just got realeased a few mins ago as I write this post. A tweet from the official Offensive Security twiiter account read
The bar has been raised for Penetration Testing Distributions. Introducing kali 2.0
Linux fan boys, penetration testing experts, wannabe hackers(sk’s) have all been waiting for the release of Kali 2.0 nicknamed Sana.
Much like we trace our ancestors back to Africa, so we trace Kali Linux back to Knoppix! Knoppix was one of the first ever bootable Live Linux Distro’s. Still in existence, Knoppix is a classic distro with a loyal community. Over time the Knoppix project was forked into WHoppix (yes the WH are meant to be capitalized) that was then re-forked into WHAX. WHAX was then re-branded and streamlined into the BackTrack that we all used. There is a common thread throughout these distros, (Knoppix, which became WHoppix, and then WHAX and finally into BackTrack); that is that the lineage focused on intrusion detection and digital forensics. BackTrack expanded the scope and allowed for many more tools to be incorporated into the distro.BackTrack was originally based on SLAX6 In any event, BackTrack had a long reign of almost seven years as the pentesters and hackers distro of choice. However, as of March 2013 the venerated distro was decommissioned and replaced by Kali Linux.
That is just by the way.
What is new in Kali that makes us so excited.
1. It is based on a new 4.0 kernel, now based on Debian Jessie, improved hardware and wireless driver coverage, support for a variety of Desktop Environments (gnome, kde, xfce, mate, e17, lxde, i3wm), updated desktop environment and tools and many many more….hahahahaha.
2. Kali linux is now a rolling distro which means that packages will be pulled from the Debian Testing after changes are tested and are considered stable enough, this changes will come as regular (weekly) updates that has the flexibility of updating the core system and at the same time making use of newer packages as they arrive.
“This move is where our choice in Debian as a base system really pays off – we get to enjoy the stability of Debian, while still remaining on the cutting edge.” they said.
3. Native support for KDE, GNOME3, Xfce, MATE, e17, lxde and i3wm.
Kali’s long stay away from Gnome 3 is finally over as the new version now uses the gnome 3 desktop environment, with some custom changes.
4. NetHunter and New ARM images
It is nice to know that NetHunter has also got an upgrade and is available in Kali 2.0. Love hacking mobile phones? I see your smile. New images have also been released.
The new NetHunter images for Nexus 5, 6, 7, 9, and 10. The OnePlus One NetHunter image has also been updated to Kali 2.0 and now has a much awaited image for CM12 as well.
Don’t forget the images for Raspberry Pi, Chromebooks, Odroids, tablets and many more.
5. Updated VMware and VirtualBox Images
You want to try your kali on a virtual machine? Use VMware or VirtualBox images. You can download the 32 and 64 bit versions here. The you will also be able to build your own virtual environment if you wish by installing the virtual guest tools. Make sure to read the documentation before doing that.
For the Metasploit fans, it is sad to note that the metasploit pro and community package have been removed, you only get to have the open-source msf package pre-installed. You can download them for yourself at rapid7’s website.
Guess you want to know where to download the Kali 2.0 images.
Well follow this link and download your flavor!!!
Note that you can also upgrade from Kali 1.x to 2.0 by changing the repo links in your sources.list file and then running an update before a “dist-upgrade”.
cat << EOF > /etc/apt/sources.list deb http://http.kali.org/kali sana main non-free contrib deb http://security.kali.org/kali-security/ sana/updates main contrib non-free EOF apt-get update apt-get dist-upgrade reboot
Make sure you have not been using incorrect kali repos because this can prevent your installation from running well or even running at all!!!
Lest I forget, here is the link to the Kali Dojo workshop files held at Defcon23 .Kali Dojo
Well, emotions down, Windows 10 guys really got to me in the last 2 weeks. Now I will sleep smiling, we shall get back to them too. Just kidding. But Offensive Security Killed it.
About to run a new installation, an upgrade on a different system and run the tools, then get back to you with much more feedback and hopefully lots of awesome tutorials!!!
Happy Kali Sana Day!!!
